Perez Attorneys Continue Former Mayor’s Appeal

By Jeff Cohen

September 28, 2013

Attorneys for former Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez have filed what should be their final brief before the appeal of his criminal conviction goes to court.

Perez was convicted in 2010 on multiple corruption-related offices. He later resigned his office.

Since then, he has been out of prison until the appeal of his case runs its course.

In the brief filed today, Perez’s attorneys continue their argument that the two cases against the now former mayor should not have been tried together. They also argue that combining the two cases hindered Perez’s ability to testify.

The defense is calling for an acquittal on all charges. Alternatively, it is asking for two new trials.

The state says his appeal could be argued as early as November.

Here’s the brief. Reply Brief

(If you’re scanning quickly, look for the section about Perez’s lie to Inspector Michael Sullivan and the effect the defense says it had on the trial.)
