Republicans Recommend Three Candidates To Fill Airey-Wilson's Seat

The Hartford Republican Town Committee is recommending three candidates to fill Veronica Airey-Wilson's seat on the city council. Airey-Wilson has applied for a voluntary retirement incentive program. Her last day will be Dec. 31.

The town committee held a special meeting Tuesday to hear from eight people interested in the seat. Members then voted for their favorite candidates. The top three vote-getters were Steven Bonafonte, a lawyer for Travelers insurance (with 6 votes), Corey Brinson, Airey-Wilson's nephew, who ran unsuccessfully for secretary of the state in the last primary election (with 5 votes), and John O'Connell, a former city council member (with 2 votes). Town committee Chairman Michael McGarry said O'Connell does not intend to run for the seat, rather, he was using the opportunity to express his views on certain Hartford issues.
