Here's the last of the Candidate Focus Series for the board of education: Luis Rodriguez-Davila, a Democrat.

Age: 55

Nieghborhood: Parkville

Family: 24,000 children, their parents, principals, paras, maintenance, security, support staff and retirees.

Years in Hartford: 20

The city of Hartford is a beautiful constellation of cultural and ethnic diversity. And it is this diversity that contributes to both richness of life and academic challenges in our school system. Families that come to Hartford expect their children to receive a quality education. Providing the kind of education that will advance quality of life requires us to address two fundamental issues:

We are confronting an immediate need for stronger reading instruction in each classroom to close language, vocabulary and comprehension gaps that will otherwise constrain students throughout their academic lives.

We need to access and allocate funds that support learning environments in a variety of areas as our schools deliver a quality education

As a member of the board of education it is my responsibility to ensure that Hartford attracts the kind of capable, committed, and innovative teachers that can bring out the best in children with the right kind of principals and funding to deliver a quality education.
