Gonzalez, Vargas Win, Recount Needed in 5th

By Andy Hart

A recount will be needed to determine whether political newcomer Brandon McGee pulled off a major upset in Tuesday’s Democratic Primary. At presstime, Hartford resident McGee was in a dead heat with union activist Leo Canty of Windsor. Both candidates had 774 votes, according to unofficial results from the Hartford Registrar of Voters and the Secretary of the State. Windsor Mayor Don Trinks had 267 votes. In a race so close, a recount is automatic. The 5th district was altered last year so that the majority now lies in Windsor. As a result, McGee was the definite underdog in the race.

In the 3rd District, incumbent State Representative Minnie Gonzalez won with 778 votes to 251 for Victor Luna, based on unofficial results.

In the 6th District, Edwin Vargas beat incumbent Hector Robles, 658 to 518, based on unofficial results.

In the bitterly contested race for Democratic Registrar of Voters, unofficial results show incumbent Olga Vazquez beating Ramon Arroyo, 2,786 votes to 2,293. Incumbent Republican Registrar of Voters Sal Bramante beat challenger Nyesha McCauley.
