Vargas Afterthoughts

By Jenna Carlesso

September 14, 2011

Mayoral candidate Edwin Vargas, who unsuccessfully challenged incumbent Mayor Pedro Segarra in yesterday's primary, said today he hasn't made a decision yet on whether he will run as an Independent candidate in November.

But, he said: "My initial feeling is that I'm inclined not to because of the [primary] numbers."

"It was somewhat discouraging," he said. "We thought our message had resonated well with voters.

"There was a lot of money on the other side. I'm not sure with a poor community, in a poor economy, if you can compete with that. I'm getting a sense that it would be an uphill battle."

City Council President rJo Winch, who also was unsuccessful in the primary Tuesday, has said she would run as an Independent candidate in November.
