Crime Stats In

By Jeffrey B. Cohen

April 09, 2009

The city's weekly and quarterly crime statistics are in.

Some good news for folks who live in the city: Total major crimes are down citywide by 12.7 percent year-to-date over last year. The news is also good in three of the four city districts -- crime is down in the Northeast, Northwest, and Southeast districts.

But a rise in aggravated assault, robbery and larceny in the Southwest make that district the only one to see a percentage uptick year-to-date over 2008.

"What we've identified and have been working on are the increases that we've seen suddenly in larceny, robbery and also auto theft," said police Spokeswoman Nancy Mulroy.

Citywide, most major crime categories -- murder, rape, robbery, burglary, larceny and auto theft -- are down year-to-date. But aggravated assaults are up 10.1 percent.
