Hartford Stage recently announced that registration is underway for the Tony Award-winning theatre’s popular Summer Theatre Workshops. The six five-day workshops and one two-week workshop target students in a variety of age groups and cover a range of practical theatre techniques. Recent highly successful Spring and Winter Theatre Workshops have sold out, so early registration is encouraged. With the exception of Making the Musical offered during the later part of the summer, all classes run from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Two classes of Mission IMPROVable are offered July 16 – 20. Classes are divided by age. One class for ages 7 to 10 and another class for students ages 11 to 13. Students learn to respond in the moment with a focus on physical comedy and vocal dexterity. There will also be a special performance by improvisation troupe extraordinaire, Off the Cuff.
Myths, Fairy Tales, and Legends will be offered July 23– 27 and is geared for students ages 6 to 9. The workshop builds confidence and brings the great stories of old to a new generation by exploring classic tales in a new way.
The Teen Acting Workshop will be held during the same week, July 23– 27. Students explore scenes from different plays dealing with issues such as war, censorship, racism and love.
New to the roster this summer is Dragons, Wizards & Warriors July 30– August 3 for students ages 10 to 13. Medieval adventures supply the structure as students work from scripts that capture the imagination and bring fantasy to life. Lord of the Ring move aside!
Also offered the week of July 30– August 3 is Monologues Inside & Out for ages 14 to 19. This one week intensive prepares students to get the part they want. Students will focus on the basics of auditioning, picking the right monologue and cold readings.
Another new workshop this summer is Musical Fundamentals for ages 8 to 12 during the week of August 6– 10. Students explore the fundamentals of the Broadway stage and discover the power behind tales told with singing, dancing and acting.
Back by overwhelming popular demand is Making the Musical, a two-week program for ages 12 to 16, running August 6 – 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (due to expanded content, this class is an hour longer than others offered this summer.) In this course, students create an original musical that incorporates song, story, and dance while learning to work as an ensemble.
Tuition for each weeklong workshop is $195. The two-week Making the Musical program is $410. Partial and full scholarships, based on need, are available.
