The next Council meeting will be Monday, June 24 in Council
Chambers. The next public hearing will
be Monday, June 17, also in Council Chambers.
Grandparent Commission –
The Council referred to public hearing June 17 and to the Health and Human
Services Committee, an ordinance which would create a commission on
grandparents. The Commission, composed
of 15 members, will be charged with advising the Mayor and Council on programs
to benefits grandparents raising grandchildren.
Grandparent Housing – The
Council passed on consent a resolution which designates $52,000 in Urban
Development Action Grant (UDAG) funds to study the cost of converting the
former Clark Street School into supportive housing for grandparents and their
grandchildren.
Commercial Parking Lot
Regulations – The Council passed an ordinance which changes the regulations
governing commercial parking lots. The
ordinance raises permit fees for commercial lots. Fees for a 16-30 space commercial car lot will be raised from $15
to $250 for lots outside downtown and to $500 for downtown lots. Rates for other sized lots will go up
proportionately. In addition, the
ordinance requires lot owners to ensure that lots are paved with a durable and
dustless surface. The Planning,
Economic Development, and Zoning Committee recommended passage of the
ordinance.
Playing Field Fees -- On
the recommendation of City Manager Albert Ilg, the Council passed a resolution
which raises the user fees for city playing fields. According to the resolution, the fees have not been raised in ten
years, though the cost of maintaining the fields has gone up. The resolution will also raise the rates
charged to non-residents relative to residents.
One Book for Greater Hartford
– The Council passed a resolution recognizing the One Book for Greater Hartford
project. The project is part of a
nationwide program designed to bring people in a community together, promote
literacy, and to encourage parents and children reading together. The book chosen is Breathe, Eyes, Memory
by Edwidge Danticut.
