Grandparent Commission – The Council referred to public hearing June 17 and to the Health and Human Services Committee, an ordinance which would create a commission on grandparents. The Commission, composed of 15 members, will be charged with advising the Mayor and Council on programs to benefits grandparents raising grandchildren.

Grandparent Housing – The Council passed on consent a resolution which designates $52,000 in Urban Development Action Grant (UDAG) funds to study the cost of converting the former Clark Street School into supportive housing for grandparents and their grandchildren.

Commercial Parking Lot Regulations – The Council passed an ordinance which changes the regulations governing commercial parking lots. The ordinance raises permit fees for commercial lots. Fees for a 16-30 space commercial car lot will be raised from $15 to $250 for lots outside downtown and to $500 for downtown lots. Rates for other sized lots will go up proportionately. In addition, the ordinance requires lot owners to ensure that lots are paved with a durable and dustless surface. The Planning, Economic Development, and Zoning Committee recommended passage of the ordinance.

Playing Field Fees -- On the recommendation of City Manager Albert Ilg, the Council passed a resolution which raises the user fees for city playing fields. According to the resolution, the fees have not been raised in ten years, though the cost of maintaining the fields has gone up. The resolution will also raise the rates charged to non-residents relative to residents.

One Book for Greater Hartford – The Council passed a resolution recognizing the One Book for Greater Hartford project. The project is part of a nationwide program designed to bring people in a community together, promote literacy, and to encourage parents and children reading together. The book chosen is Breathe, Eyes, Memory by Edwidge Danticut.
