Items of Special Interest / Articulos de Especial Interes

JAG Innovations Grant – The Council referred, to its Committee on Quality of Life, Public Safety, & Housing, a resolution authorizing the City to apply for a $1.0 million Justice Assistance Grant from the U.S. Department of Justice. If approved, the Police Department will utilize the grant to develop and implement the South District Partnership, to address the multiple factors that contribute to violent crime. The initiative will work with community service providers and programs and will incorporate the Police Department’s PROSPER program (Preventing Recidivism Through Organized Supervision, Partnerships and Enhanced Relationships). Fondos para Innovaciones JAG. El Concejo referió a la Comité de Calidad de Vida, Seguridad Pública y Viviendas, una resolución autorizando a la ciudad el aplicar para una beca para Asistencia de Justicia, de $1.0 millones de dólares, de parte del Departamento de Justicia del gobierno federal. Si se aprueba, el Departamento de Policía utilizara los fondos para desarrollar e implementar la Sociedad del Distrito Sur, para enfrentar los múltiples factores que contribuyen al crimen organizado. Esta iniciativa servirá para trabajar con proveedores de servicios y programas comunitarios, y ayudara a incorporar el programa PROSPER a dichas iniciativas. (Segarra) (Articulo #5)

Permit Fee Reductions – The Council passed a resolution to extend the existing program of permit fee reductions through June 30, 2014. In February of 2012, in order to promote development in the city, the Council authorized a reduction in fees charged for building, heating, plumbing, refrigeration, sprinkler, electrical, elevator, and demolition permits. The reduction was for a one-year period and will expire on March 31, 2013 unless Council reauthorizes it. (Segarra) (Item #11)

Reducciones para cuotas de permisos. El Concejo aprobó una resolución para autorizar el extender el programa de reducción de cuotas para permisos de construcción, calefacción, plomería y otros permisos relacionados con estas áreas hasta 30 de Junio, 2014. En Febrero del 2012, para promover el desarrollo de la ciudad, el Concejo autorizo una reducción para dichas cuotas cobradas en construcción, calefacción, plomería, refrigeración, electricidad, elevadores y demoliciones. La reducción era por un año y expirara en Marzo, a menos que el concejo reautorice. (Segarra) (Articulo #11)

Protecting Children – The Council referred, to its Operations, Management, Budget & Legislative Affairs Committee and its Health & Human Services Committee, a resolution concerning products designed for children which contain toxic chemicals that can result in birth defects and can cause irreparable harm to children’s hormonal systems, brain and sexual development, and long-term memory. The resolution calls for passage of State legislation that would create a process for identifying chemicals of high concern and a plan for replacing such chemicals with safer alternatives. (Jennings, Cruz, Anderson, MacDonald) (Item #23)

Protegiendo a los Niños. El concejo referió a la Comité de Operaciones, Administración, Presupuesto y Asuntos Legislativos y la Comité de Salud y Servicios Humanos, una resolución que habla acerca de productos diseñados para niños que contengan químicos tóxicos que puedan provocar defectos al nacer y que pueden causar daños irreparables a los sistemas hormonales de los pequeños, así como problemas de cerebro, desarrollo sexual y memoria a largo plazo. La resolución pide que se apruebe una legislación estatal que pueda crear un proceso para identificar químicos de este tipo y planear el remplazo de estos por alternativas más seguras.
