Up Against a Wall: Housing Affordability for Renters

This report uses the data to analyze patterns and trends in the relationship between renter incomes and rents at the state, county and city level. It finds that in 2003 renter incomes are not keeping up with housing costs throughout much of the country, forcing an even greater share of renter households into unaffordable housing. These data confirm that affordability was a significant problem among renters in 2003 and that it is worsening. The report is based on the findings of National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) analysis of the American Community Survey (ACS) supplementary survey. The ACS is a new comprehensive survey of Americans being launched by the U.S. Census Bureau to provide national and local housing and income data on an annual basis. (PDF Document; 36 pages)
